On November 11, 2018, the Vienna Philharmonic under Franz Welser-Most performed a memorial concert in the opera house of the Palace at Versailles to commerorate the end of World War I. Exactly a century earlier, fighting on the western front had ended with the armistice agreement that was signed at Compiègne. In June 1919, the victorious powers and their allies concluded a peace treaty with the German Reich in the neighbouring Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles. For this memorial concert, Franz Welser-Möst chose compositions that either represent the warring factions or include some reference to war and peace.
